HORSE

  • HORSE as a poker term is either the name for a certain mixed game style or horse the term for a staked player someone invested in. This is the explanation of the mixed game term. For the player explanation see the entry "Stakee".
The variant H.O.R.S.E. is a mixed game style containing the following variants of poker by using the first letter of each included variant:

    • H for Holdem
    • O for Omaha Hi/Lo
    • R for Razz
    • S for Seven Card Stud
    • E for eight or better (Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo)

Usually all variants are played as fixed or pot-limit style, seldomly the holdem part is played as no-limit.

After one or more orbits or an agreed upon number of hands the variant changes cycling through all of them equally beginning with holdem and ending with stud hi/lo.

The 50k H.O.R.S.E. Championship at the World Series of Poker is a very prestigious tournament as the winner is recognized as a strong all around poker player. The trophy in this event is named "Chip Reese Memorial Trophy" after the late Chip Reese, a professional mixed-game player who was considered the best or one of the best H.O.R.S.E. and mixed-games-specialists of all time and also one of the winners of this prestigious tournament.
