Cold Call

  • A call made to other players previous raise or raises in the betting round without having put any chips into the pot voluntarily in the round of betting to this point.
The term is most often used preflop.
The term originates from the aspect of the player entering the pot "cold", having nothing contributed voluntarly so far to the pot, while other players already contributed aggressively by raising.

There is also the term of cold-raising, usually used when a player comes over the top of a player's raise and another player's 3-bet preflop, resulting in a "cold-4bet".

    Example
    Preflop

    Steve raises,
    Mike reraises,
    Samantha cold-calls Mike's Reraise,
Steve has the option to re-raise continueing the betting round, or call or fold closing the round!
