I'm off to play in a local live game tonight in aid of a local man who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Poker players and gamblers in general often get quite a bad and in many cases undeserved reputation. However, a common trait many of us seem to have is a generosity level that is above average. Maybe it's because many of us are used to winning/losing more than many people earn in a week, we're just less attached to money and short term swings which will include charitable activites. To…

I'm going to slightly change the tone of this blog. I've mostly used it as a goals and results journal since starting it and lets be honest, it's been more than a bit dull. I'm a pretty opinionated guy and I'm going to start posting more of my opinions going forward. I'm going to start on vlogs and give a shout out to Daniel Negreanu who has been vlogging most, if not every day so far of the WSOP. I've been enjoying the insight into what it is like at the WSOP as I haven't been lucky enough to h…

End of month report: May has been fantastic. My volume is way down for the reasons mentioned in the post above. I also ran a coaching promotion of five sessions for £50 which took up some of my time with promoting it, chatting with potential customers and then actually delivering added sessions but that's part of my overall plans for my net income, so I'm totally fine with it. When I have played, I have played at the top of, or close to the top of my game nearly all of the time. Rarely have I sl…

Time for a little update I think. A lot has been happening lately both poker related and in other areas of my life. I'm super busy but busy doing things I mostly enjoy, which makes me feel very lucky as most of my friends/family have busy lives often doing things they don't enjoy. Away from poker, my support work with people that have learning disabilities has been off the charts busy. I have more work opportunities than I need but because I like to maintain good links and relationships with org…

Hi guys, It's been a while since my last update and thats primarily because it's been a pretty dull time for me. I've been forced to play mostly on Pokerstars because of some IT problems meaning I had to play on my secondary machine which doesn't like Sky/Unibet much. I had a good month in terms of bb/100 but my hours played was way down because quite simply, I did not enjoy the grind. Playing hour after hour grinding tough zoom pools with barely a fun player in sight (and by fun player, I mean …

Live poker night trip report. Set off with some friends to a casino some 90 miles from home. We got there 15 mins before the tournament started to be met with a huge line for registering the tournament. The tournament normally gets 100+ players but for some reason, last night they only had 6 dealers, so capped the field at 60 with alternates. There must have been at least 30 people in front of us in the line and as we didn't fancy waiting for half the field to be eliminated before getting a seat…

As some of you might know, last month, I had a look at something called tankroll management. The basic premise is to move up stakes aggressively, giving you the opportunity to go from 10nl-100nl in short order if you run and play well. I was leery of this when I started but I think it can have some merit for the right people during the early stages. I do believe that once you get to, or through the 25nl stage, the goalposts should move though because the difference between just 10nl and 25nl is …

I've been hitting the zoom tables this week as part of my tankroll challenge and much as I have previously railed against Zoom in particular and fast fold poker in general, I have been enjoying it. It feels nice to be playing with a HUD and having at least a bit of an idea about how my opponents approach the the game and the software is delightful compared to the software I have become accustomed to using. I'm interested to see just what kind of hourly rate I can achieve at Zoom. I'll just be pl…

I'm enjoying this challenge so far. Only three days in but it feels more exciting than any other challenge I've set myself in the past due to the hopefully fast pace of it. The weekend is now upon us and I hope to catch out some weekend warriors to give me a nice forward spurt. I recorded a 2+ hour session last night that had plenty of action considering it was just four regular tables. youtube.com/watch?v=kddBb3Xv5Fw

This weeks update is regarding a BRM concept I have recently been made aware of, a tankroll challenge. The loose concept is pretty much based on moving up limits aggressively whilst being willing to move back down very quickly too with the goal of reaching the higher limits much more quickly than when using more traditional BRM. There is a much greater risk of busting your account but the rewards are greater too, which I think would appeal to more recreational players that have a regular income …

youtube.com/watch?v=KHdbQacRNz8 I'm branching out. I intend to learn push/fold spots and become a competent PLO player this year. I have been becoming less and less thrilled with grinding 6 max NL cash day in day out and I'm hoping it will increase the pleasure I get from playing, which in turn should increase my volume and overall bottom line. It is slowly dawning on me that I'm getting less and less pleasure from grinding 6max NL cash games. I enjoy playing when games are good but they're not …

I have never played a single hand on the chico network as I have a fear of depositing to US facing sites. How soft are the fields there in cash games please?

Time for a little update I think. I ended January making around $600 from cash games and I won a small tournament for £230 or so on Sky. I have been finding good games harder and harder to come by, so I played quite a lot of $30nl Snap on 888. I didn't particularly enjoy it, as I don't enjoy fast fold poker in general. I much prefer to play static tables, build dynamics with players, have a good handle on gameflow etc. Sky has been poor for traffic, so I have made a smallish deposit on Unibet fo…

I ended the challenge early. My reasons are explained here youtube.com/watch?v=CpCZSs7r6UQ Cliff notes are pretty much I made $500 in around 40 days and started to lose motivation to grind 10nl until the end. Also, games were really good at my normal stakes over the festive period and it felt silly to not play them. I feel going from $100 to just over $600 in 40 days is pretty good and demonstrated what I hoped to demonstrate when I set out, which was that it's possible to build a bankroll from …

I would like to talk about overbetting. I don't want anyone to just repeat stuff they have read/learned but don't actually apply to their games. I want to read about how often you're utelising the overbet, which streets on, which parts of your range you're doing it with etc. Try to be honest. Don't just put what you think is the right time to do it, put how you're actually using it right now as well. Maybe you're not using it at all. If you're not doing it, or only rarely doing it, why? I haven'…

Challenge Update: Two weeks and one day into the Sky part of the challenge and I am +£288 in 25 hours play for a whopping £11.44 per hour. I was initially thinking that even an hourly of £7 might be impossible to achieve long term playing a mix of £8nl and £10nl but with just reasonable game selection (ie not playing when there is a heavy reg presence) and making hay during off peak times, I wouldn't like to say what hourly might be possible. Whilst I'm crushing so hard, I am having a lot of fun…

Challenge update incoming: I passed the +£250 milestone on Sky tonight courtesy of a +£50 ninety minute session. It's hard to believe how well it has gone since switching to Sky. I haven't had a losing session yet and I'm running at £13ph playing just £8nl and £10nl which is bonkers and unsustainable in equal measure but I'll take it whilst it lasts. Given how soft the games are, and they are remarkably soft if you practice reasonable game selection, I firmly believe that 12bb/100 should be an a…
